The Name Game
Do you have a Jean-Luc or a Big Earl?
Most days Jean-Luc is perched on my dining-room chair, at the ready whenever I might need him. He’s reliable, entertaining, and helpful.
Jean-Luc is my laptop computer.
My mom has a weekly encounter with Big Earl. He waits for her just outside the back door.
Big Earl is the big plastic trash container she and my dad wheel out to the curb once a week. When not at the curb, Earl hangs out back with Vern the Urn.
When I was a kid, my family had a 1978 Chevy Nova that my sister named Cassie (for Cassie Nova, get it?).
I thought my family was odd, giving fun, familiar names to inanimate objects. That is, until I recently compared notes with several friends who’ve also named their cars, backyard swimming pools, and GPS devices. Apparently this naming the stuff in our lives thing is pretty common.
So, we want to know: Have you named any of the gadgets, cars, and other inanimate objects in your life? And if so, what did you name them?

I haven't named the stuff in my life -- but now I feel like I've been missing out on something! :)

My family has always named cars, houseplants, and virtually anything else around. With that in mind, I guess it isn't surprising that I even named my apartment when I moved in!

I can so relate! We not only name household objects (our pale green Prius is "Honeydew" and my new red computer is "Ruby"), but we name all our puppy's toys. The hysterical thing is telling him to go get Oswald or Frankie--and watching him retrieve the correct one.

My husband and I usually name our house. The first house we lived in was Favour House. We've built our own house, and it is named Rehoboth - the Lord has made room for us! (Gen 26:22)

Yes, we name things. My 1st car was a Chevy Nova as well, we called her Chevy Chicken. I was a chicken driver when I was 1st learning in drivers ed at 14. It all seems so silly now. It was the Crispy Chicken after I backed in to the mail box. My dad had nicknames for all my cousins. I was Clyde the Glide after Clyde the glide Drexler. I wasn't very graceful & would run into things after a growth spirt. Gliding into things.

I did have a name for my car also. 1975 Nova, I named it Christine. That was my first baby before there was children.

Yes, we have named some of the inanimate things in our life such as the stove and the washing machine and cars and such.

When I was in college in the 80's I had an old 73 Buick we named 'Old Bessie" Nothing since then except my daughter's endless supply of stuffed animals

I have always wanted to live in a house with a name. After 12 years, I still do not have a name for my current house.
Also, nicknames were not big in our family growing up, so they are hard for me to adopt as an adult!!

As a professional musician, I name my horns -- I figure if I spend hours everyday with my lips pressed up to it, it deserves a name. And since I am a woman, they all get men's names: Corey, Florian (he was German), and now Detlef (also German -- they make good horns).

I always thought I was kind of weird for naming all things. What a relief I am not the only one! For instance, my microwave is Horatio, my washing machine is Robotina, my bike is Smart, my husband's bike is Hortencia, etc.

I used to drive a Gremlin named "Corky" in college.

I personally haven't named anything, but my grandmother (who called herself "Granny Good Witch) named her car Peter (it was a VW Rabbit) and when I was small she called me "Poor Pitiful Pearl" because I have straight, fine hair that never stayed in clips and would fall into my face making me look pitiful. She called my sister "Grace"...not sure why, but I'm believe it had something to do with her being NOT graceful.

Actually, I also have a Jean-Luc. Not as sturdy as a laptop perhaps, but definitely entertaining and probably longer-lived. About 10 years ago, a friend sent a card with a cute guy on the front and a brief note inside. It was the second such card we've recycled, so I knew what to do and after Jean-Luc had perched on my dresser for awhile, I wrote a brief note in response, put a cake-shaped sticker in his hands and sent him back in time for my friend's birthday. Jean-Luc disappears sometimes for months, even a year, at a time, but eventually he shows up again in my mailbox and brings a smile. I don't see my friend much anymore as we live in different towns and she's since married and has children, but Jean-Luc is an ongoing reminder of our friendship. There's not much room left to write and he's almost obliterated with stickers, so like his predecessor, Jean-Marc, before him, he'll have to be retired soon and tucked away in a drawer. That's ok. I'm sure there's a Jean-Paul waiting in the wings...

My MINI Cooper convertible is named Rupert, a veddy British name for my veddy British car. This year for Christmas my children gave me a GPS that, of course, they programmed to speak in the voice of a British man. Thus Rupert not only has a name, but he also has a voice.

My kids have over 100 stuffed animals of every size and each of them have been christened! Another tradition we have is that since my divorce 4 years ago, I let the kids pick out the Christmas tree and each year it's given a name! When the tree comes down, they save some needles to remember "Tiny" by :)

We name all sorts of things. Currently, my car is named Lexie, and my hubby's SUV is named Sport. My daughter named her car Janet. We have even been known to give nicknames to our pets' names; for instance, Cookie, our Llasa Apso, is Cookie~Roonie (don't ask me why, because I don't know...), and our lab Cinnamon is called Cinnie~Minnie. I guess we just do it because it's fun. Glad to know we aren't alone! Blessings, Cheri

My Spring Green laptop computer is named April and my car is Victoria. I heard a Christian comedian one time tell that he named his bed "In The Word". He liked to sleep in late so when people would call before he got out of bed, he'd tell them he was, "In the Word."

I've had a very fun time the last few minutes reading all your namings and stories behind them. And while I've appreciated all the creativity -- chuckled over some -- I laughed out loud (the healthy kind of guffaw) at Donna's names for things.
I've always called my computers Desktop and Laptop, my car I've called Car. Not so inventive. (My kids have nice names, and I do call my husband by his name :) )
From now on I'll say Laptop and Not Laptop. Thanks, Donna.
What a great post!

We have a battery operated automatic trash can in our kitchen. If you put your hand near it or walk by it opens up. We speak to him every morning and call him "Mons" (short for monster)

Yes, we use nicknames in our family. Some of mine are Buzzard, Vanessa and Gertrude. I do think it is important to name your car. One of my cars was "Spilly". And my current car is Azul. In my opinion if you name them, they become a part of the family and will take good care of you.

Yes, we name all sorts of things! Cars we've owned have been dubbed things like Deerslayer, Chernobyl, the Mother Ship -- and yes, one survived a meeting with a deer, the second produced toxins and the third was the soccer taxi. We named our trash bin, too -- Brutus. The latest tag is Rueben for the robot vacuum cleaner! (But our poor cat just goes by Kitten. )

My cars have always had names, beginning with my 1983 Camaro Z-28, who was 'Jessie' as in Jessica Rabbit, from the movie 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' (she says "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way." I changed it to "I just drive that way" and the rest is history). My next two cars were the "Skymobile" since the license plate was "SKYDNZR" (my first online nickname--before the internet really got started). My car now--a 2002 Saturn--is named 'Garnett' because she's a dark, shimmery red. I always imagine her insisting it be spelled with two t's...
When I was married, my husband had a beautiful red mustang that we named "Hotlix" after a brand of cinnamon lollipop (the car was exactly the same color). We're divorced now, but he has two more Mustangs--A red one named "Rhythm" and a black one named "Sunshine."
My mom's 1991 red Camaro RS is "The Duchess," and my laptop is "Athena" (wise and full of information).

We have always named cars - maybe bc they weren't new or reliable so you would say come on Suzy or crank Earl but I like the idea of naming other stuff. Thanks for sharing

We have always named our cars growing up - the main one I remember was an old Morris 1800 who went by the name Petrina (meaning 'rock-like" or "steady")!
Since I have got married, I have continued on with the tradition - much to my husbands amusement, and my old 1982 Honda is called Aggie; due to her being old but having character, she needed a name that suited and as soon as I saw her, Aggie just fitted!!! Everyone calls her Aggie - my hubby, my family, his family (who don't name things), all my friends... and she is extraordinarily reliable, and has been leant out to family and friends if they have ever been car-less. She is great...
Our main car is called Lily (she is white - so Lily-White is her whole name), but we tend to just refer to her as "the new car", as she doesn't have as much personality as Aggie does... but she is great also!!!!
Our cat is Pixel, but we have hundreds of nick-names for her; and we also have nick-names for each other... so I suspect this little tradition will continue on for a while yet!!!

We call our GPS "Gypsy." I chose the name because it has GyPSy in it, but it fits because she is talkative, sometimes obnixiously so, and she gets around.

I love naming things. I have a Suburu Sport called Roo--who gets blamed for taking corners too fast or otherwise showing high spirits. Years ago I had an ancient refrigerator that was short and squatty and was called Old Stub. The same applied to our first motor home. I had a vacuum named Ollie and we always name our Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys and roasting chickens.

I got my first car in 1969. It was a 57 Chevy. We named it animal because the inside was torn up by my dad's dog.

We don't name things in out family, but we have one cat, origionally named Ichi (Japanese for one), but we call him "moose" because he's terrified of the moose head in our living room and also "senor amore" because he's so lovable.

Most of the things I'ved named are at work! We have similar laboratory equipment so we named them to tell them apart. We have a pair called Fred and Wilma, and when we got our robots I won $25 for naming them Lucy and Ethel!
We used to have nicknames for the kids, but after thinking about it, we don't really use them anymore.

I am a business manager for a dental office - Keeping the books. I have always had an adding machine I called Fred. Now other staff, patients and even the dentist talks about "Fred". "Fred works for Celeste, or what does Fred say about that? ..." One day, not feeling so well, I told them Fred said it was his day off! :)

My first car, a Chevy Malibu, was named "the Firebomb Special" after it had been burned when the car parked next to it caught fire. The paint was scorched all along the driver's side but was ok otherwise. I also had a Nissan Maxima named Max (what else?) & a Chevy Chevette named Charlie. Now I have a Hyundai that I would like to name, but haven't thought of a good one yet!

I used to always name my cars-I had one called William as I said it conqured the roads! We have a ladder called George and a plant call Eric after the people who gave them to us. My Dad always named people when he didn't know their names ie the 2 ronnies or the bottle washer.

Our GPS is called Misty. We started out naming her Miss Directions and then it became Missed Directions when it was wrong. So for short, she is Misty.

This blog made me smile and I can't wait to think of names for all the objects of affection/or not in my life.
Great idea. Why didn't I think of it?? Hmmmm

My husband and I named our cars.
We had one that was named Pepita (Ford Ranger) Grinch (Green Geo-metro) then I decided to give him a christian name and changed it to Esperanza which means hope. We also had a minivan and we named her Teresa (it was burgundy like a fruit we call cereza). We also name our stuffed animals (veji, lilo, pati and monin) those are our babys. Last but not least I call my husband "pollo" which in our island (Puerto Rico) is a saying when you want to tell someone they are good looking.

My husband and I once borrowed a GPS system from a friend when we went on a long road trip. She respectfully received the name "naggy". At least it was "her" and not me telling my husband how to drive. She was actually very annoying as she was way to nice at times. Such as
"please make a legal u-turn." Not exactly how I would have probably said it. But we made it to our destination and "Naggy" took my place as the annoying back seat driver to my husband.

My first car's name was Barney, and I currently have Capo (as in the tool used on the neck of a guitar!). :)

I don't name things, can't even name my cat..called her Kitty. But my sister has always named her cars..starting with Gertie the Gremlin, all the way to Libby her Liberty Jeep. My daughter has caught on and calls her Corolla - Lola the Corolla.
Fortunately my kids had good names!

I named my first (and current) car 'Pearl'. The name comes from the official name of the colour - silver pearl. I think that is the only inanimate object that I have named though.
Posted by: Beth on January 12, 2009
This is so funny. I can't think of anything inanimate I've ever named, except for stuffed animals (are they inanimate?) and the mink I dissected in high school, whose name was Mildred (from the Somerset Maugham novel _Of Human Bondage_.) Like others we use nicknames for our pets, like our dog Lucy whom we call Goose (from Lucy-Goose.)

Our family plays the name game as well. My first computer I named Wilbur. Then came Agatha, Storm, and Mackie. My brother named his vehicles Abu and Monty, and his GPS Maggie. My car is Pepper. Once we had a lab whom we named Otto, Max, and Shadow. Poor thing must've suffered from identity crisis! Now the multi-naming has involved my cats. I have a Harriet a.k.a. Helga; a Linus a.k.a. Lineaux; a Captain Hook a.k.a. Hookie a.k.a Boyfriend a.k.a Lard of the Seven Seas; and a Baci a.k.a. Baci Baldacci a.k.a Kooky Cat.
Our money plant had been Moolah. When it died, we got another one and christened it Moolah as well. Recycling names is a weakness my fiance and I share. We've had several Mucho Bears (in reference to stuffed toys/magnets/etc.)
I believe this naming of inanimate objects can be traced back to when, as little girls, my sister and I each had a Cabbage Patch doll. They were Faith Kelda and Josephine Ellen, and if anyone had any doubts, all they had to do was check their birth certificates.

This is hilarious folks.I enjoyed every single one of them and did not even
have guilt feelings. My 17 year old son
named his first car"Beakster".He has
kept it for 23 years and it is still a beakster because he happens to have
a nose which looks like a beak.
