Words on Walking
To inspire you in The TCW Walking Challenge
Walking through my neighborhood the other day, I recalled a quote by Henry David Thoreau I’d recently read: “An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.” Granted, it was 2:30 in the afternoon (I’m not a morning person), but I certainly resonated with the blessing component.
I felt grandness in being part of a long tradition of walkers. And not just walkers, but keen observers who recognize the hidden blessings in simply putting one foot in front of the other.
So I went searching for other wise words on the wonders of walking. I’ve listed several of my favorite quotes here to inspire you as well.
I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.—John Muir
Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much.—Ralph Waldo Emerson
Walking is a man's best medicine.—Hippocrates
Who will tell whether one happy moment of love or the joy of breathing or walking on a bright morning and smelling the fresh air, is not worth all the suffering and effort which life implies.—Erich Fromm
The sum of the whole is this: walk and be happy; walk and be healthy. The best way to lengthen out our days is to walk steadily and with a purpose.—Charles Dickens
It is impossible to walk rapidly and be unhappy.—Mother Teresa
Walks. The body advances, while the mind flutters around it like a bird.—Jules Renard
The best remedy for a short temper is a long walk.—Jacqueline Schiff
If you pick 'em up, O Lord, I'll put 'em down.—Author Unknown, "Prayer of the Tired Walker"
The true charm of pedestrianism does not lie in the walking, or in the scenery, but in the talking. The walking is good to time the movement of the tongue by, and to keep the blood and the brain stirred up and active; the scenery and the woodsy smells are good to bear in upon a man an unconscious and unobtrusive charm and solace to eye and soul and sense; but the supreme pleasure comes from the talk.—Mark Twain
As these great writers note, walking can have a profound impact. Since you’ve now been walking for a while, what resulting blessings have you seen in your life? How have your regular walks affected you physically, mentally, spiritually, and relationally?
Blessings,

Walking has become a very important part in my depression therapy. I am also not a morning person, so my only private time in the afternoon is 30 minutes, right after I get from work to home, and before I get involved with kids and house chores, I change my office uniform for comfortable clothe and shoes ... and just walk alone until I feel a delicious tireness which allows me to sleep much better at nights ... without any medical help and reduces my anxiety to eat. Medically prooved, walking is one of the best and cheapest resources for a better soul, heart and body. Try it!!

Hi All - Since I began walking back on March 17th, I have noticed a definite im-
provement in my blood pressure & I go to sleep more easily.
Mentally, I feel good about what I'm doing to help my body stay active and this fact is showing up in my relations with others. I'm calmer. I'm less fixated on my problems.
l'm more ready to dive into the Word, each day.
While I walk inside most days, once in a while I walk outside. I enjoy this rare occasions & try to make the most of them.
THank you so much for this Walking Challenge.

Walking cured my migraines, my frustrations, and gave me an opportunity to witness to my neighbors. Two ladies often walk with me that do not know the Lord. When I walk alone I praise God for His goodness and come home feeling encouraged.

Walking refreshes me physically but more so spiritually! While walking, I have time to talk with the Lord and I believe that He speaks to me as well.
Walking regularly did not only get rid of my anxiety and palpitations two years ago, but it gives me a time to see and appreciate the beauty of the Lord's wonderful creations in nature. Praise the Lord!
The Lord blesses me in many ways when I am walking!

Walking clears everything else from my mind that has been bothering me and helps me to focus on the blessings God has given me through his creation. I believe I'm a more grateful person and happier after a walk. Mentally and physically, walking is something I look forward to.

Since I started walking a month ago with my wonderful walking partner, I have found joy and peace in observing the environment and appreciating God's handywork. The weight loss, stamina, extra energy and toning body are all added extras!
Thank you Lord for a wonderful world!

I'm 20 days into a "100 days and 100 miles" challenge with my daughter. Walking isn't an automatic thrill--yet. I am enjoying though.

I hae been waling or riding my bike since I first read the challenge. In doing so, I have found soooo much moe energy. Even when I am tired, I tell myself that I will feel better if I just get out and walk....and it works. The energy is coming back and I feel like I have a life again. I have been using 1# and now have progressed to 2# weight to walk with. While walking, I bump up the regimen with doing arm exercises, too. I have seen a big difference in my arms...yeah! Also...try walking backwards for some of your walking...start with 100 steps at a time. Works a whole different set of muscles!

As of today, I am 30-years-old. I have just discovered the walking challenge, and I wanted to let you know that I plan to join you. I live an extremely sedentary lifestyle. I am morbidly obese. I have battled anxiety and depression on-and-off for years. I have numerous medical issues that have diminished my quality of life. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired! I have a husband and son who want me around for a long time. Please pray for me!!!

Kat - I am praying for you! Hang in there!
I was exactly where you are only about 1 year ago--so I know that a better life IS possible...one baby step at a time!
I now enjoy walking! Night before that I walked at a good pace for an hour. Six months ago, I could barely motivate myself to walk to the laundry room from the living room!!
What has helped me the most is spending time in God's word (even if it's only a few verses!)
I also stay motivated by constantly reminding myself that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Do I want the Lord's temple full of french fries or glazed doughnuts? Or, do I want to honor all the amazing gifts he gives each of us by eating fruits and vegetables? I'll make a huge salad (I HATED salad!!) and think about how in Eden God planned for us to eat fruits and vegetables -- showing his amazing concern for every aspect of our lives!
I often think of 2 Timothy 1:7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. "
Not only are we the daughters of the king of the universe, but within each believer is the power of the Holy Spirit--the very Spirit that raised our Lord from the dead!
Cling to those promises and take babysteps toward better health and happiness!

Wow! What a great concept! But, I need help! I had gastric bypass in Dec. and have plateaued and not lost the weight I should have - even though I'm following the dietary guidelines. Will the walking make a difference? Because of the weight, I have had hip and knee pain, so I've been ignoring the possibilities of walking. Please pray that I will make time for the exercise as I make time to meet with the Lord daily. I might even combine the two activities -- plodding and praising!

I am 50 and I had a hysterectomy due to severe problems. I was also 30 pounds overweight. As per doctors and nurses orders I needed to get up and walk after surgery. I was in severe pain but with God's strength I did it. When I got home after 7 days in the hospital, I could also hardly walk because of the pain. Little by little I would get up and walk. I thank my wonderful Lord that now I am walking 3 miles everyday outside and I have lost weight. I remember when I could barely walk down the block. Is been 3 months ! Walking is a blessing, and a wonderful time to be talking to the Lord. I encourage anyone no matter how hard, take the first steps outside or inside even for 5 minutes. You will feel great and experience God's wonderful strength. Blessings !

I have been walking for years! Not to say that I have always been consistent with it. When I do fall away from this God given form of exercise, I notice the void in so many ways. Firstly, the lack of energy, and noticeable changes in sleep are telltale signs. Also, this is time to worship Jesus, which elevates me spiritually and cardiovascally!!!
Oh, and Peggy, keep up your walking one step at a time...You go girl!!!

I've been walking for about a month now and feel great! It's the middle of summer so I wait until 7:30-8;00 PM and I go around my block twice which is about a mile. I put on Worship music full blast on my ipod and enjoy this time worshipping God and putting one foot in front of the other! Glory!!!

I thank God for this topic. I started walking about a year ago within our compound. Usually now I walk about an hour most days. It has help to lower my sugar level. I am able to sleep better, any day I miss walking I dont sleep on time. I still wish I can lose more weight. I also learn to praise the Lord as I walk. Dear Camerin I will keep walking till Jesus comes. God bless you all. Amen!

Walking is a cure for everything -- body, mind and spirit.

Walking in the morning makes my day! It refreshes me and motivates me to face another day. Walking alone in the morning gives me the opportunity to enjoy God's beautiful nature and to listen to God in silence. In the quietness of the morning, I talk to God and with God while walking. Sometimes I walk with a companion (who is a morning person, of course) and realize that it is a good bonding time.
