Talk the Walk

Making the most of multitasking

April 29, 2008 |

I'm afraid some of my neighbors know me as “That Crazy Walking and Talking Woman.” You see, whenever I walk in the evening, I process my day’s events. I think and talk to myself—sometimes audibly. I don’t mean to talk aloud; I just get really wrapped up in my thoughts—and, thankfully, distracted from my uncomfortable sweating.

I especially love walking with another person, so there’s someone who’ll talk back. On an afternoon stroll with my friend Stephanie not long ago, we were so busy catching up on her family and my recent breakup that we sailed through our 20-minute workout.

But my favorite way to use my walking time is to talk to God. A walk becomes more meaningful when I pass a bed of tulips and thank God then and there for his beautiful handiwork. Or pray for the homeless guy who often occupies a bench in my neighborhood. Or request guidance or forgiveness for the day’s events before these situations lead to worry or guilt.

Because walking is so simple, it allows for this easy multitasking. While I walk I can watch a workout DVD, listen to favorite music or an audio book, blow off steam, mentally plot out the week’s menu, or accomplish any number of other things. And all these other tasks make the task of walking easier.

Whether you’re a walking multitasker or a workout purist, I pray you stay motivated and disciplined as you walk your way to a healthier you!

Blessings,
Camerin Courtney

What do you do while you walk? Do you have a favorite walking companion, play list, or DVD?

I love this post. I struggle with consistently making time to take care of my body and to spend quality time with the Lord -- combining both makes me want to go for a talking' walk :-)

I usually listen to Ravi Zacharias' talks while I walk or run. And if I'm all caught up on those, I sometimes listen to a Celtic podcast I subscribe to. Other times, I just listen to the "noisiness" of the silence around me.

This is great! I walk, too and often wonder what my neighbors think of me as I work through the events of my day. Not only is it good to know that there are others out there, processing and praying through life's daily events in this way, but the physical workout can be refreshing and energizing as well.

Usually when I walk I listen to upbeat music on my iPod. It helps me focus on my walking and also to focus on and worship the Lord while I walk.

This is a great inspiration, just viewing the walk of other women in their encounter with christ; and learning through the word Gods goodiness and grace. As a single mom sometimes we are more burden than other moms and i thank God for the this outlet.

My walks normally find me behind a stroller pushing not one, but two infants. As a day care provider, I enjoy walking anytime their is nice weather. We normally walk to the elementary school (about 1/2 mile) three times a day when it is nice. This allows me to get lots of fresh air and also exercise. Besides, if someone sees me talking to myself I can always blame it on the babies :).

Great Article! I too walk daily with my dog Obi and many times my husband Bob joins us as well. It is a great way to either start the day to help plan activities and thank God for my many blessings, or in the evening to take the time to reflect on the days events. When I first started walking reguarly about 3 years ago I weighed over 300 lbs and could not walk very far. Now I have lost 170 lbs by changing my eating habits and walking 3 1/2 miles a day. I Thank God for helping me find a new lease on life. Thank you for sharing your walking experience and faith story.

Camerin,
Thank you for this post. The busyness of life sometimes causes one to be literally running from one task to the next and we have to find more creative ways to have alone time with the Lord. I too use my walks in the mornings to talk to the Lord. However it helps me to be disciplined as well because I have to get out of bed early enough...this walk takes about 75mins. This discipline helps in other areas too...if I can stick to this, then I can also endeavour to "schedule" other activities! Thanks again!

I love this article,I have walked for yrs and love being outside and among the nature and the fresh air it all helps the stress of the day or a very good way to start the day. I just recently lost the very good friend who always walked with me she moved so I have been struggling this will help me to get out and talk to God and enjoy the wonders of his creation and just know that he is there and I am so close to him.

Since the weather turned warmer in Mar my cell phone bill was outrageous. I caught up with family members and old friends while I walked the 2 mile loop through my village. Praying for each household as I pass it is what Ive done this month as I cant afford any higher phone bills. Recently after visiting my old neighborhood, it meant so much to me when a former neighbor told me that she still prays for me each time she walks past my house even tho I moved over 2 years ago. She walks 5 miles per day, thats a lot of prayer coverage and love!

It's amazing at how much we relate to each other. When I walk I talk to God too, especially when I walk in the morning. And it's so funny because once I was walking and so engrossed in my prayer to God that I didn't hear the person walk by me and when he did I thought he must think I'm nuts. Keep walking and keep talking to God ladies. I believe God smiles when we do that.

My husband is my walking companion (which is appropriate because he is also my life companion :-) and I love to walk with him because I can bounce ideas off him and use him as a sound boarding and vice versa. He also asks me my opinion and values my input on a project at work or we just vent to one another as we are also walking off the days stresses. We find our evening walk to be quite cathartic!

Hallelujah--someone else who gets caught with audible thoughts while alone! I try to remember to chew gum so at least there's a reason for my mouth to be moving. Singing works too, in response to the odd looks--or coughing/clearing the throat.

I laways talk to myself while walking or even when am alone. At the end of the day, I evaluate myself. Its also the time I get to talk to God and just mediate and think about His goodness.

As I am about my "purposeful" walks
I too have met up with strangers and take time to stop and say "hi", or ask a question. If the welcome is there to talk awhile, we do that, too. I find out the person's name. We somehow find we have a lot of thoughts in common...yes, even with the homeless person. When I get home I write the person's name in my prayer book. This keeps my daily contact with God fresh and my intercessary prayer ongoing. If there is a need that I can help meet, I make that attempt. I really believe every human encounter is, for me, the work God has given me in that moment in time.
